As a testament to peserverance, 20 seniors who completed the requirements for graduation through Summer School studies received their diplomas Thursday evening in the Pueblo South High School auditorium.

The majority of the graduates represented Dutch Clark Digital, with other D60 high schools also boasting graduates.

The Class of 2024 was welcomed by Rich Mestas, who once again served as Principal for D60 Summer School.

“Your commitment to graduation will enhance your lives and the lives of everyone in our community,” said Principal Mestas. “We are confident that you possess the skills necessary to lead a life of purpose and impact, in and around our wonderful community. It is now your time to go out into the world and shine.

“Your hard work and dedication have empowered you to seek the career of your dreams, and help change the world for the better. We are proud of each and every one of our graduates.”

Brad Gerler, a Teacher on Special Assignment who served as Summer School Coordinator, offered advice to the graduates.

“The thing of value that we’re really here to celebrate tonight isn’t going to be printed on expensive paper in a fancy font,” Mr. Gerler said. “You walked into this room tonight already in possession of what matters: the knowledge, skills, and personal character that you have learned and displayed in order to earn your diploma are far more valuable than any piece of paper ever could be.

“Those attributes are going to be what opens doors for you. Once you receive your diploma, you’re going to put it on a shelf or in a drawer and rarely pick it up again. But, the work ethic, determination, and grit that got you that diploma -- you will carry those with you every day for the rest of your life.”

The diplomas were conferred by Superintendent Barbara Kimzey, with the class accepted by D60 Board of Education Vice President Dr. Kathy DeNiro.

The graduates were lauded by dignitaries in attendance, including principals Andy Clementi (Pueblo East "Eagle Empire") and Alex Trujillo (Centennial High School) Pueblo South High School Dean of Students Jeff Wilkerson, Summer School Administrative Intern Russ Avina, Student Engagement Manager Theresa Madrill, and members of the Superintendent's Leadership Team.
